Step one: file the complaint

Step two: get the defendant served
The case does not truly start moving until the defendant is served. Step three: the response window

Step four: what happens if there is no response
If a properly served defendant does not respond in time, the plaintiff may seek a default. But default judgments rest entirely on the strength of service.
